10 Mac Shortcuts I Wish I’d Known Years Ago
Most Mac shortcut lists start with Command + C and end somewhere around Command + Tab. Those shortcuts matter, but they are not the ones that changed how I work.
The real time-savers are the combinations that remove a tiny interruption from a task you repeat dozens of times a day: opening a file just to identify it, dragging files between folders, hunting for the right window, cleaning formatting after pasting text, or saving a screenshot only to delete it a minute later.
None of the shortcuts below will save an hour in one dramatic moment. They save two seconds here, eight seconds there, and — more importantly — preserve your concentration. After years of using a Mac for development, writing, research, and everyday work, those small savings have added up.
Here are the ten I would genuinely miss.
1. Switch Between Windows of the Same App
Shortcut: `Command + ``
Most people know Command + Tab, which switches between apps. But it does not help when you have three Finder windows, two browser windows, or several documents open in the same application.
Command + \`` cycles through the windows of the app you are currently using. Add Shift` to move in the opposite direction.
