Hi! I’m Joanne. I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and the equivalent of a math minor. I LOVE math and science. I have been tutoring students in these subjects since high school. I received honors in high school for my understanding of math. During college, I tutored in a tutoring center. After 9 years at Motorola designing circuit boards for cell phone base stations, I became a mother and then homeschooled my 4 children. For the last 20 years I have been homeschooling where I have taught many subjects. Homeschooling is essentially one-on-one tutoring. In a co-op classroom setting, I have taught Physics, Algebra 2, Geometry, STEM, Electronics, and Gym as well as coached volleyball and softball for over 7 years. I have had students tell me later that their time in my class sparked their desire to enter robotics competitions and the engineering field.
My goal with tutoring is to help the student not just understand how to solve a problem, but to understand “the why”. I want them to be able to retain what they learn and be able to apply it years later. I use the Socratic method to draw out what the student already knows and help them make connections. Everyone has different learning styles, so I provide multiple different ways to make the math and science topics understandable to the student. I have patiently drawn pictures, created songs, made up acronyms, worked out actions, created 3 dimensional objects, etc., all with the goal of helping my student grasp the material. I help my students explore the different ways to solve the problem so that they can find the way that makes the most sense to them. There is nothing better than hearing a student say “Ah Ha! I get it now”.
