I would seriously caution founders, especially non-US founders, before using Stripe Atlas if Stripe is one of the main reasons you're incorporating in the US. We incorporated our company properly, built a real product, started acquiring customers and processing legitimate transactions through Stripe. Then, as the business started growing, Stripe suddenly classified us as “high risk,” disabled payments and froze our payouts. Think about how insane that is from a founder's perspective. You're encouraged to incorporate, build your business, integrate Stripe and start processing payments. But once your transaction volume starts increasing, the same growth you're working toward can suddenly become part of a risk review that shuts down your ability to accept payments. And good luck trying to get a meaningful explanation. So much of the process feels automated. Automated risk systems, automated emails, generic responses and very little opportunity to actually explain your business to a human being who understands what you do. I'm not saying every founder will have the same experience. I'm saying founders should understand the dependency they're creating. Do not build your entire company around one payment processor. Have alternative payment rails. Have multiple banking relationships. Have a contingency plan for what happens if your processor shuts you down tomorrow. Because I learned that lesson the hard way. Stripe Atlas can help you create a US company. That does not mean Stripe will continue processing payments for that company. Those are two very different things, and founders should know that before building their infrastructure around Stripe.
